Allowing Myself

…to feel, to love, to be.

#30daysofdresses – day 21

The Sunday of our trip to Vegas meant brunch at the Jasmine restaurant inside the Bellagio. It was formal, elegant, and quiet (ah yes, finally I found a place in Vegas that is quiet). The restaurant overlooks the Bellagio fountains and each time the fountain show comes on, the music in the restaurant changes so you can hear the music that lines up with the water dance.

Oh, and my dress just happened to match the flowers & butterfly decor. #nailedit

After stuffing ourselves with breakfast items, Chinese food, sushi and ridiculous pastries (one had a pipette of rum stuck in it) we walked the Bellagio Conservatory to see the harvest flower display.

And then we were on our way back home to LA.

Dress is Kohls – purchased for $4 on the sale rack. Little yellow belt appears again. Purse is from Aldo.

#30daysofdresses – day 13

Friday night I hosted an event for work and wore one of my favorite new dresses.

The little yellow belt was in play again, and I wore nude colored heels. This is also the dress I wore during the wedding weekend last month.

H picked it out for me at Forever 21 – he loves the cut of it, I love the color and texture. It feels way more expensive than a $25 dress at F21. Also, the back has an interesting opening though I don’t have a photo of that to share with you.

The event went really well – mostly b/c I made the executive decision to bump up the budget and cover everything well enough. Cutting corners is just not working for our events anymore. And I had my temp overseeing two volunteers – and the three of them rocked check-in, so I didn’t have to spend a moment dealing with the door.

It was the first time I felt like I hosted an event – instead of running around like a crazy person (but I already said that in Saturday’s post). Yay me. #levelup

Oh – and the bracelet is Alex and Ani (a trend that has yet to hit the west coast) from my awesome coworker (a thank you gift for helping her with her crazy event in June). While I’m not into super trendy things, I love that it’s from A and also that it means energy which is EXACTLY what I need when working events, and reminds me to protect my energy levels as much as possible.

Short post for a short dress 😉

#30daysofdresses – day 6

This heat wave is no bueno. It’s making wearing dresses hard. Like I said – I just want to be in shorts + tank tops, but I’m figuring it out.

This dress from is my go to for hot, hot heat. It’s short, light-weight and doesn’t require a bra. TMI, I know – but if it’s so hot there’s a chance of boob sweat, I’m looking for any chance to lessen the layers I’m wearing.

Saturday afternoon, we grabbed sushi at Whole Foods and drove to a park for lunch. Even in the shade, it felt sweltering, my eyes were red from the dryness. Ugh. We ate lunch and Carter got some more time outside. The dress + flip flops served me well.

Later that night, we bought tickets to see Gone Girl (Side note: hated the book so much, I quit 20 pages in, but the trailer looked good & H wanted to see it. I love Ben Affleck’s movies lately and Carrie Coon is my newest girl crush, and was absolutely my favorite part of the movie). I knew the movie theater would be chilly, so I upped the dress with my (apparently) favorite boots and gold sweater.

I’ve had this sweater a long time. I don’t think H likes it much, but I’m glad I kept it. It falls right into this season’s mustard yellow / gold coming back, not to mention the over-sized sweater + dress look. And it worked for the heat and the day. Good enough.

Dress is RipCurl, sweater from JCrew outlet (10+ years ago?) and my necklace is a feather from Liz Lamoreux.

#30daysofdresses – day 3

Day 3 – or – the answer is always yellow.

Snapped this in the bathroom at my therapist’s office building before running off to a coffee meeting, 2 phone calls and a boat-load of emails. It turned out to be a pretty successful day.

Originally, another dress was on my mind for day 3, but once I was out of the shower the original pick felt too heavy / clingy / formal. Enter one of my favorite things – jersey – and this dress was much more in line with the mood / energy I needed for the day. It served me well.

The purse was a bridal shower gift from my cousin and his wife. The dress and boots are from Kohl’s. Jean jacket is from Forever 21…But the magic is in that tiny yellow belt.

I pulled if off of a black & white dress from Kohls, which I wore for the rehearsal dinner of my wedding weekend. (You can see the very top of that dress here.) Some how, a few months after getting styled, I had this epiphany that I can mix and match things – like, actually cut pieces off of one item to wear with another. The belt was originally attached to that dress – it was like a crazy light bulb going off in my head when I realized I could snip the ties and use it with any outfit. I felt like an f-ing genius, that I’d somehow graduated to a new stage of personal style. ::boom::

One time, I read that Ann-Marie always adds a yellow accent to any scrapbook page she’s working on. The answer is always yellow.

And being that navy is my life, yellow is an obvious accent color – that basically never occurred to me until I was daredevil enough to snatch that belt from one dress and wear it with another.

So there you have it. Keep your eyes peeled for more of that yellow belt, I promise it’ll show up again.
